Classes and RulesRules in any form of racing, weather full size or radio controlled, are very important. Rules are meant to be helpful, keep the playing field level and make the racing more fun. The rules are not enforced with an iron fist, making life miserable for the racers, but we do try to stick with the intent of the rules. We have always administered the rules fairly and honestly, with the benefit of the doubt going to the racer. An exception to this will be during major race events like indoor or outdoor championship races, or Tamiya championship races, the rules are strictly enforced. Classes differentiates one style of RC vehicle from another. Some classes are good entry level cars and others are meant for more advanced racers. Most classes are available in either an electric version or nitro versions. Nitro versions can only be run outdoors. There are currently 5 classes of vehicles racing indoors at LERCS and Monster truck joins when we go outside. Other hobby grade classes are welcome and do enter from time to time. Below is a brief explanation of each class with some rules for that class. Stadium Truck
The Stadium truck class consists of any 2 or 4 wheel drive stadium style truck. Popular kits include the Duratrax Evader ST, Traxxas Rustler,,Traxxas Slash 2wd, and the Speed T by Team Losi. The Stadium truck class is a little bit large for indoor racing but that has not stopped many of our racers from doing it. This is a good entry level class, (2 wheel drive) and one that can be run indoor or outdoor. 2 WD and 4 WD are run and scored seperatley. 2WD
4WD
Rally TT-01/GT-2
The Rally class is a great entry level class that can be run indoor or outdoor. The only chassis being used is the Tamiya TT-01 chassis, (except GT-2)we keep this class limited to this chassis, this keeps the playing field level. The TT-01 is a 4 wheel drive tub chassis that can take a great deal of punishment. As with any other hobby grade RC car, all parts are available and replaceable, when you race you will break parts. When this class was first introduced the body was limited to those that were reflective of the World Rally Championship series. Recently we have changed the body rules to allow pretty much any body. Rally TT-01
GT-2The GT-2 class is a good stepping stone for those that want to move to a little faster motor or brushless and a slick tire. This class also allows any tub style chassis to be used.
1/16 Scale
This is a spec class which includes the two 1/16 scale vehicles from Traxxas, the e-revo and the Slash. These are the little brothers to the E-revo monster truck and the Slash stadium truck. These little 4wd trucks are very fast and can take quite a pounding. Other 1/16 or 1/18 scale vehicles can race in this class but will be scored seperately.
Mini
This consists of all M-chassis cars by Tamiya. This two wheel drive class is governed strictly by Tamiya's TCS(Tamiya Championship Series) rules. Competitors in this class can run the M02, M03 or M04 versions of the car. Although these cars are not as fast as some of the other classes, they are very relient on driving line and proper setup, so they are not a great entry level class.
Sedan
This class consists of any four wheel drive sedan type chassis. Popular chassis in the sedan class are the Team Losi JRX-S Type R, Tamiya TRF415 or TA05, Associated TC5. This class is not limited to, but it is meant for more advanced racers. These cars are the fastest we drive and have many adjustments on them. They can be a handful to drive when set up properly and much harder when not. We are currently (Indoor season 2010/2011) going through a transition phase in Sedan with respect to motors and ESC's. We would like to see the class transition to the motor rule to conform to ROAR Super Stock class 13.5 brushless. New drivers to the class must use a 13.5 brushless, but can use a timing advance ESC. Drivers that are currently in the class and already have 10.5 motors can use them but only with fixed timing ECS's. When replacing motors you must get a 13.5.This should keep the racing pretty close.
Monster Truck
This class is a four wheel drive monster truck style of vehicle. These vehicles attract attention by being fast, heavy and loud. By the time you are at the end of the straightaway your 10 pound truck will be going 40 mph, now you have to get it slowed down and turn it. This class is unlimited. The most common monster truck being raced is the Traxxas Revo. Some other trucks in this class are the HPI Savage and the Losi super truck. If you want to get into RC racing and want to go with nitro, this is the class to get. These trucks are very durable and you can usually keep going after you crash. With that being said, I would also like to state that these trucks can be a handful to drive and the only reason I will include them in the novice level is their durability which allows you to get more track time instead of replacing broken parts. The Revo is also available in an electric version now, but because of the size of these trucks, it is an outdoor class only.
1/8th Buggy/TruggiesThis is for 1/8 scale buggies and truggy style of vehicles. If there are enough vehicles they will be run in their own class. If there is not enough they will be run with monster truck but will be scored separately. |
